Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Acworth’s population grew by 7.7 percent to 836, adding 60 residents. It is one of 55 New Hampshire towns with population under 1,000. The median age is 42.6, with 25.7 percent of the population under 18 years of age and 15.2 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households was 318, with an average size of 2.6 persons. Of those, 234 are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 515 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 21.6 persons per square mile of land area. Acworth contains 38.9 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Acworth was first chartered in 1752 as Burnet, in honor of William Burnet, colonial governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 1728. However, no settlements were made under this charter. In 1766, the town was regranted under the name Acworth, honoring Sir Jacob Acworth of the British Admiralty, who had Portsmouth shipping interests.
