Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Allenstown’s population grew by 4.2 percent to 4,843, adding 194 residents. The median age is 35.5, with 27.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.6 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 1,902, with an average size of 2.5 persons. Of those, 1,254 are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,962 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 241.0 persons per square mile of land area. Allenstown contains 20.5 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: First granted in 1721, the town was named after Samuel Allen, governor of the province in the late 1600's. A portion of Bow was annexed in 1815, and a portion of Hooksett in 1853. Home of Bear Brook State Park, the area was once known as excellent bear country, and a good hunting ground for wild geese and ducks.
