Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, population in Antrim grew by 3.8 percent to 2,449, adding 89 residents. The median age is 37.4, with 29.2 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.0 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 932, with an average size of 2.6 persons. Of those, 624 are family households, with an average size of 3.2 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,160 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 69.5 persons per square mile of land area. Antrim contains 35.7 square miles of land area and 0.8 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: This town was settled prior to the American Revolution, but did not get its incorporated name until 1777. It was named for County Antrim in Ireland, which was the native home of the land’s owner, Philip Riley. The town was home to the now-defunct Nathaniel Hawthorne College.
