Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, Ashland’s population grew by 2.1 percent to 1,955, a numeric increase of 40. The median age is 36.8, with 23.4 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 13.6 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 853, with an average size of 2.3 persons. Of those, 515 are family households, with an average size of 2.9 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,149 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:174.2 persons per square mile of land area. Ashland contains 11.3 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:Once the southwest section of Holderness, Ashland was not incorporated until 1868. It was named in honor of Henry Clay, for his birthplace in Ashland, Virginia, and his estate in Kentucky. Ashland includes the geographic center of the state, located just west of Lake Winnipesaukee.
