Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, the population in Auburn grew by 14.6 percent to 4,682, adding 597 residents. The median age is 36.8, with 28.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.1 percent age 65 and older, the ninth lowest percent of people in that age group among the cities and towns. The total number of households is 1,580, with an average size of 3.0 persons. Of those, 1,322 are family households, with an average size of 3.2 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,622 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:189.3 persons per square mile of land area. Auburn contains 25.5 square miles of land area and 3.3 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:Once part of Chester, it was known as Chester Woods, Chester West Parish, Long Meadow, and then Auburn. The name comes from English literature by Goldsmith, as did Auburns in New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. Auburn includes a large portion of Lake Massabesic, water supply for the City of Manchester.
