Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, population in Barnstead increased by 25.4 percent to 3,886, adding 786 residents. The median age is 38.8, with 26.4 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.9 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 1,422, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of those, 1,096 are family households, with an average size of 3.1 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,994 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:93.0 persons per square mile of land area. Barnstead contains 42.9 square miles of land area and 2.0 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:Granted in 1727, the town was established to deal with rapidly expanding population in the seacoast area. A majority of new settlers came from either Barnstable on Cape Cod or Hampstead on Long Island, and the town's name is a conjunction of the two. The town includes three villages, South Barnstead, Center Barnstead, and Barnstead; and is home to at least nine lakes and ponds.
