Demographics, 2000 Census:Population in Belmont increased by 15.9 percent from 1990 to 2000, growing by 920 to 6,716. The median age is 38.4, with 25.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.4 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 2,641, with an average size of 2.5 persons. Of those, 1,868 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 3,113 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:229.0 persons per square mile of land area. Belmont contains 30.1 square miles of land area and 1.8 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:First chartered in 1727 as a parish of Gilmanton, known as Upper Gilmanton. In 1859, the voters of the town petitioned to rename the town Belmont, to honor Mr. August Belmont, a New York financier, in hopes that he might make a financial contribution to the town. Mr. Belmont, however, never even bothered to acknowledge the act. The town borders Lake Winnisquam.
