Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Bennington’s population grew by 13.4 percent to 1,401, a numeric increase of 165. The median age is 35.1, with 28.6 percent under the age of 18 and 8.1 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 552, with an average size of 2.5 persons. Of those, 356 are family households, with an average size of 3.2 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 635 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 124.6 persons per square mile of land area. Bennington contains 11.4 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Taken from portions of Hancock, Greenfield, Deering, and Francestown, the town was named in commemoration of the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 14-16, 1777, near Bennington, Vermont. Vermont's Bennington was named for Governor Benning Wentworth, who was responsible for naming many towns in New Hampshire and Vermont.
