Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, population in Boscawen grew by only 2.4 percent to 3,672, a numeric increase of 86. The median age is 39.4, with 22.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 18.5 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 1,260, with an average size of 2.6 persons. Of those, 913 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,295 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 147.2 persons per square mile of land area. Boscawen contains 24.9 square miles of land area and 0.5 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Named for an English admiral, Edward Boscawen, who fought under General Amherst in the conquest of Canada. One of the first log forts was located here. The Contoocook Fort on the Merrimack, built in 1739, was used for protection against the Indians. Boscawen includes the village of Gerrish, and is home to the State Veterans Cemetery.
