Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, Bow’s population grew by 29.8 percent to 7,138, adding 1,638 residents. It had the second highest percent increase in Merrimack County. The median age is 38.6, with 32.6 percent of the population under the age of 18, the sixth highest percent of that age group, and 8.4 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 2,304, with an average size of 3.1 persons. Of those, 2,045 are family households, with an average size of 3.3 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,330 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:258.3 persons per square mile of land area. Bow contains 28.2 square miles of land area and 0.4 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:One of several towns established in the Merrimack Valley to alleviate population congestion in the seacoast, which formed a 'bow' on the map. There is also a bend in the Merrimack River within its borders, and the name Bow may have come from either source. Bow is the birthplace of Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist and leader of the Christian Science movement.
