Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, Bristol’s population increased by 19.6 percent, adding 496 residents for a total of 3,033. The median age is 38.5, with 24.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 14.2 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 1,219, with an average size of 2.5 persons. Of those, 830 are family households, with an average size of 2.9 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,075 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:179.6 persons per square mile of land area. Bristol contains 17.1 square miles of land area and 4.8 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:Extensive deposits of fine sand or clay similar to the "Bristol sand" used in Bristol, England, to make fine china and pottery gave the town its name. Here the sand was used to make a superior quality brick, marketed as "Bristol brick." The town was center of manufacturing in the early days for goods such as paper, leather, woolens, flannel, bedsteads, and piano stools. Bristol includes the lower two-thirds of Newfound Lake.
