Demographics, 2000 Census:From 1990 to 2000, Canaan’s population increased by 9.0 percent, adding 274 residents for a total of 3,319. The median age is 37.7, with 27.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 9.7 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 1,279, with an average size of 2.6 persons. Of those, 930 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 1,588 total housing units.
Population density, 2002:62.9 persons per square mile of land area. Canaan contains 53.3 square miles of land area and 1.8 square miles of inland water area.
Origin:Chartered in 1761, the town probably took its name from the hometown of early settlers from Canaan, Connecticut, which was named for the Biblical land.
