Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, Chichester’s population grew by 15.1 percent to 2,236, adding 294 residents. The median age is 38.0, with 25.5 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 10.0 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 823, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of those, 638 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 849 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 110.1 persons per square mile of land area. Chichester contains 21.2 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Chichester is one of seven towns granted in 1727 when New Hampshire was still a part of Massachusetts. As were several other towns, it was named in honor of Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle, Earl of Chichester, and England’s Secretary of State.
