Demographics, 2000 Census: Cornish’s population remained virtually unchanged between 1990 and 2000, going from 1,659 to 1,661, a 0.2 percent increase. The median age is 41.6, with 25.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 12.2 percent age 65 or older. The total number of households is 645, with an average size of 2.6 persons. Of those, 466 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 697 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 40.0 persons per square mile of land area. Cornish contains 42.0 square miles of land area and 0.6 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Established in 1763, the town was once known as Mast Camp, because it was the shipping point for the tall masts floated down the river by the English. It was named for Sir Samuel Cornish, a distinguished admiral of the Royal Navy. Cornish is now a well-known summer resort for artists and writers, with residents including Maxfield Parish and Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
