Long before the historic record began, the Abenaki Indians called this area home. The word "winnipesaukee" comes from an Abenaki term meaning "lake around islands." This 18-hole, 700-acre Club is the newest "island" in this historical chain. Nestled above the lake that gave it its name, Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club lies cradled in the natural seclusion of New Hampshire's White Mountains. The valleys, gorges and lakes that make up this gorgeous landscape were carved from ancient granite walls millions of years ago by glaciers more than a mile thick. The result is breath taking. Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club inherits land with a rich cultural legacy. According to legend, part of the property once served as a sanctuary for an "underground railroad" that helped as many as 75,000 slaves seek freedom in Canada between 1830 and 1860. The remains of a small stone cottage, long lost in the mountainous woods surrounding the golf course, whisper a story Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club respectfully observes, a place that the Club will preserve from disruption.
