Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, population in New Castle grew by 20.3 percent to 1,010, a numeric increase of 170. The median age is 49.6, the second highest among the cities and towns, with 17.8 percent of the population under the age of 18, and 24.1 percent age 65 and older. New Castle has the ninth lowest percent of population under 18 and the sixth highest percent of population age 65 and older. The total number of households is 443, with an average size of 2.3 persons. Of those, 314 are family households, with an average size of 2.7 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 491 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 1,255.0 persons per square mile of land area, the 4th highest among the cities and towns. New Castle contains 0.8 square miles of land area and 1.3 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: The largest of several islands at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, this town was originally known as Great Island. Chartered in 1679 as a parish of Portsmouth, it was incorporated in 1693. New Castle is unique in the state, being the only town made up entirely of islands, connected to the mainland by bridges. New Castle is home to the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Hotel, site of the Russo-Japanese Peace Treaty of 1905, mediated by Theodore Roosevelt.
