Demographics, 2000 Census: From 1990 to 2000, population in Newfields grew by 74.7 percent, the second highest percent increase among the cities and towns. There were 663 new residents, for a total of 1,551. The median age is 36.5, with 31.1 percent of the population under the age of 18, the tenth highest percent among the cities and towns, and 7.5 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 516, with an average size of 3.0 persons. Of those, 432 are family households, with an average size of 3.2 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 532 total housing units.
Population density, 2002: 223.2 persons per square mile of land area. Newfields contains 7.1 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
Origin: Sitting on the west bank of the Squamscott River, this town was part of Exeter until 1727, when it was part of Newmarket. It was called Newfield Village as early as 1681, then South Newmarket, a parish of that town. In 1880, a resident of the town, Dr. John M. Brodhead, presented his own library and $10,000 to the town on the condition that it be renamed Newfields. The town was so incorporated in 1895.
